How Teekay made it easier to familiarise crew members with an entire vessel
Teekay needed a digital solution for training crew members in LOTO procedures and familiarize them with their vessel.
Kanda developed a digital twin of the entire ship where crew can move around get know the ship, before they even get onboard.
What they needed
- Get a digital twin of crude oil tanker for further development.
- Build two different LOTO procedures for training in a digital space
- Minimize time need for ship familiarization
A digital twin can be used as a 3D environment for different training modules, marketing purposes in a trade fair and etc.
How it works
Seafares join the ship through a VR headset, and is transport on to the ship, is then able to either move around the ship and familiarize themselves with the entire ship. They are also able to conduct LOTO procedures namely Single Point Isolation and Multi Point Isolation training, either on the bridge or in a part of the engine room.

The solution we created
Kanda create a simulated virtual environment of Teekays Limirick Spirit. VR places the user onboard the ship in a virtual environment. Instead of having a video or presentation in front of them, users are immersed and able to interact with the ship.
For this project we are using the Oculus Quest Virtual Reality headset. The users are able to look and move around in a physical space. Teekay are able to start the VR simulation from anywhere, without worrying about external hardware, such as a computers, positional trackers or physical simulators.
Users are be able to teleport around the whole vessel and carry out the LOTO procedures with theirs virtual hands (Oculus Quest controllers) to interact with different LOTO equipment. In the end of the training, statistics and analysis will be displayed and sent to Microsoft Power BI.
